Trophic Cascades

In class, we learned about what a 'trophic cascade' Is.

We talked about the food chain and how it works.
If you take the animal from the bottom, then it will stop the food chain from working. If you take away the animal from the top, it still causes a problem in the food chain.

We watched a video about how wolves changed Yellowstone national park when they got taken away.

And we watched another video on how whales change the climate.
It was really interesting how one small thing can make a big difference.

We also talked about how introducing new animals to NZ was a problem.
Here are some problems that were caused because of this:

  • Rabbits: population got out of control. Farms destroyed by rabbits.
  • Stoats introduced to deal with rabbit problem. Stoat population got out of control.
  • Stoats became the predators of native birds.
  • Native birds became endangered or extinct
