Speeches

This term we did our class speeches. My speech was about why smoking is bad. Here is what I wrote:

Eww, smoking! YUCK!

Don't you just hate it when you’re walking down the street and someone puffs all that disgusting stuff into your face?

Well I sure do. I try to hold my breath every time, because that stuff is disgusting. Do you know what’s in it?

A single cigarette contains over Four thousand chemicals, and 69 of them are likely to give you cancer.

The three worst of those chemicals are Chromium (a poisonous gas), Nicotine, and tar. Some other terrible chemicals in cigarettes can be found in other products, such as:
lighter fluid, batteries, candle wax, insecticide, paint, rocket fuel and even toilet cleaner!

That’s gross, isn’t it? No wonder why smoking gives you cancer! And this has made lung cancer the most common of cancers, so making cigarettes illegal will help to prevent lung cancer!!

But the problem is that a lot of people still smoke. The government tried to prevent smoking by making cigarettes overpriced. This still isn’t working, because many people are still smoking. Banning cigarettes will stop smoking all

Every cigarette you smoke  takes away 11 minutes of your lifespan. So if you smoke ten cigarettes per day, that means you’ll lose two hours of your life span every day. That’s shocking!

Smoking can also affect how you look. Smoking damages the skin by reducing its firmness, meaning your skin will wrinkle and sag much quicker than it would it you didn’t smoke. So don’t smoke (Unless you want to look wrinkly and old!)

But here’s the good news:
Nearly 85% of New Zealanders are smokefree – that means most of us are choosing not to smoke. The Government has set a goal so that by 2025 less than 5% of New Zealanders will be smokers. They plan to achieve this by:

Protecting children from exposure to tobacco marketing and promotion
Reducing the supply of tobacco
Reducing the demand for tobacco
providing the support for quitting.

The main reason people like smoking is because the nicotine in the cigarette is addictive It’s the same as having something like sugar. When you have a little bit, you crave for more.  So it would be a big problem if smoking got banned. It actually is bad to be forced to stop an addiction but luckily there’s a solution. There are fake cigarettes that have a taste but don't have chemicals. This can help to break a tobacco addiction.

Another trick people use is chewing on gum every time they feel like they need a smoke. If you know a smoker, inform them on these facts and help them to quit.

So let’s keep NZ smokefree, and ban cigarettes. Tell people about the tricks to break the addiction, and remind them that it’s never too late to quit. I think smoking needs to be illegal, and former smokers should have free access to the fake cigarettes to help them out of the addiction.
